Mouth taping has recently become a popular trend in the sleep and wellness space. The idea is simple. A small piece of tape is placed over the lips before sleep to encourage breathing through the nose rather than the mouth.
Nasal breathing plays an important role in healthy respiration. The nose filters dust and allergens from the air, humidifies the air before it reaches the lungs and helps regulate airflow. Nasal breathing also supports the production of nitric oxide, a molecule that helps improve oxygen exchange and circulation in the body.
When people breathe through their mouth during sleep it can sometimes lead to dry mouth, snoring and disturbed sleep patterns. Mouth breathing may also contribute to poor tongue posture and changes in airway stability over time.
Because of this, some people have begun using mouth taping as a simple way to encourage nasal breathing during sleep. Small studies and anecdotal reports suggest that it may help reduce mild snoring and improve sleep quality for some individuals.
However, mouth taping is not suitable for everyone. People who experience nasal congestion, breathing difficulties or sleep apnoea should be cautious, as blocking mouth breathing may make breathing more difficult during sleep.
Sleep quality is influenced by many factors including breathing patterns, stress levels, sleep posture and neck comfort. Tension in the neck and upper spine can also influence how comfortable people feel during sleep.
Mouth taping may help some individuals become more aware of their breathing habits, but it should not replace addressing underlying causes of poor sleep or breathing issues.
