What’s the Deal With Ice Baths?

From elite athletes to weekend warriors, ice baths have become a popular recovery ritual. But do they live up to the hype?

The Claimed Benefits
Ice baths, also known as cold water immersion, are said to:
• Reduce muscle soreness and inflammation
• Speed up recovery between workouts
• Boost mental resilience and stress tolerance

Many users report feeling energised and clear-headed post-dip.

What the Science Says
The evidence is mixed. Some studies support reduced muscle soreness and improved mood, while others suggest that too much cold exposure may blunt long-term strength or hypertrophy gains. Cold can dampen inflammation, but some inflammatory responses are actually part of healthy adaptation and growth.

A 2017 review in Frontiers in Physiology concluded that ice baths may offer short-term relief but shouldn’t be overused if you’re chasing performance gains.

The Chiropractic Connection
While Chiropractors won’t prescribe ice baths, we often talk about nervous system regulation, and that’s where this practice gets interesting. Ice exposure can activate the parasympathetic nervous system post-exposure, helping shift the body from fight or flight to rest and digest.

Regular use may complement Chiropractic care by encouraging a more adaptable nervous system and better body awareness.

In summary: Ice baths can be a helpful tool for recovery and nervous system regulation. Like any tool, they’re most effective when part of a broader plan that includes movement, rest, and spinal health. Callum LOVES his ice bath. He has one at home and will try get in it 5x per week for 3min each time. He usually has the temperature sitting between 3-5deg and feels amazing afterwards.
