How Pilates Can Keep Me Strong

Pilates is more than just a workout; it’s a holistic approach to strengthening the body, enhancing flexibility, and improving overall wellbeing. Not only is Pilates an excellent stand-alone practice for looking after your body it also happens to compliment Chiropractic care fantastically

What is Pilates:

Pilates is a low-impact exercise regimen that focuses on core strength, stability and flexibility. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, this method emphasizes controlled movements, alignment, and breathing. Pilates exercises can be performed on a mat or using specialised equipment such as the Reformer, Cadillac and Wunda Chair.

There are many types of Pilates but the most common and popular are mat Pilates and reformer Pilates. Mat Pilates is performed on a mat using body weight for resistance, the big benefit of this is that is can be done anywhere and is easily performed at home. Mat is also a great place to start for beginners as it is cost effective while still focusing on core strength and flexibility. Reformer Pilates on the other hand is best performed in a class environment where you can receive personal feedback by qualified instructor. Reformed also focuses on core strength, muscle tone and flexibility however the benefit to the Reformer is that you are able to perform a larger variety of exercises and move your body in a way that you may not be able to on a mat.

Now that you know a little bit about what Pilates is and the different styles available let’s talk about the benefits.

  1. Core Strength: Pilates emphasises the core muscles which are our deep intrinsic muscles that stabilise our spine, help with posture and day to day movements. Pilates is actually one of the rare exercise types that focuses on strengthening these smaller deep muscles instead of our larger muscle groups.
  2. Improved Flexibility: Regular practice increases flexibility and joint mobility, reducing the risk of injuries.
  3. Enhanced Posture: Pilates promotes proper alignment and posture, alleviating back pain and improving overall body mechanics.
  4. Mind-Body Connection: The emphasis on breathing and controlled movements enhances mental focus and reduces stress.

Pilates and Chiropractic Care: A Perfect Pair

Pilates and Chiropractic care share a common goal: to improve the body’s function and enhance overall health. Here are a few reasons that they complement each other:

  1. Alignment and Posture: Chiropractic care focuses on aligning the spine and correcting postural imbalances. Pilates can complement your chiropractic adjustments by strengthening the deep intrinsic muscles that support your spine and in turn make it easier to achieve optimum posture.
  2. Core stability: A strong core supports the spine and reduces the risk of back pain. Pilates exercises are designed to build core strength, which complements chiropractic care.
  3. Flexibility and Mobility: Chiropractic care helps restore joint mobility, while Pilates maintains and improves flexibility, preventing stiffness and promoting overall joint health.
  4. Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation: Pilates’ controlled, low-impact movements are ideal for injury prevention and rehabilitation. Combined with chiropractic care, it aids in quicker recovery and importantly prevents future injuries.
  5. Holistic Wellness: Both practices emphasise a holistic approach to health, focusing on the interconnectedness of the body and mind. Together, they promote a balanced, healthy lifestyle.
